LA Term

So I'm moving to East Los Angeles in a week. I'm participating in a semester called LA Term. There I'll be living with the Ramirez family. Juanita speaks very little English, so I'll work hard, but hopefully will come back fluent! Juanita works in a tortilla factory and loves to cook, so it will be a challenge not to gain 10 pounds! But maybe I'll learn to do some authentic Mexican cooking! :) Her daughter Erika is still in high school, but she speaks English, so if I ever get a headache, I can go to her to talk. But I hope I'll be able to stick it out. No Spanish for me unless it's outside of the home. I'll have a roommate whose name is Lydia, and I'm excited to meet her and become like sisters (because roommates often do!)
We are not allowed to have our cars, so we have to take public transportation. I'm really nervous about that. I guess there's a bus stop a block away from my house, so that will be nice. I ordered my buss pass, so that should have arrived at the LA Term office by now. I still have to write up a resume and pick which internships I want to apply for. I have no idea. I still have to finish the homework that was assigned during break. The book we are reading is AMAZING. But at the same time, it's really challenging me. Kevin Blue, the author, REALLY made me upset when he wrote about the church and how we have all these big building budgets, yet we are spending all this money on unnecessary things when there are homeless people sleeping on the street a block away. It's tough stuff. But I'm enjoying it.
So here's the part of the blog where I ask for prayer. I really am very nervous and uncertain about what will come this semester. Pray that I find peace in uncertainty and that my Spanish improves very quickly. Pray that God prepares my heart for all that I will see and learn and experience. And pray that I remember to keep this thing updated! :)
